S - “If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it.”
O - Just before this, Jesus is responding to the Pharisees’ question, “when will the kingdom of God come?” To which he tells them that it is already here! He then talks to his disciples about when the Son of Man will return to them. That no one will know when that time is. The Pharisees always tried to trap Jesus into saying that wrong thing; yet, Jesus outsmarted them every time. He outsmarted them and also taught His disciples. He wanted them to be prepared for when He was no longer with them. Can you imagine hearing Jesus say that if you cling to life you will lose it, but if you let your life go, you will save it? It doesn’t make logical sense! This is just like many things that Jesus taught that went against the culture. To be first, you must be last or to be the greatest you must be the least of these. Here again he wants us to let go in order to save our lives!
A - We are taught in our culture to hold on and try to be in control of our lives. You know, “it’s your life - do what you want to do” or “do whatever makes you happy.” Yet, God’s kingdom doesn’t work this way. He is asking us to let Him be the Lord of our lives, and to surrender each day to His will. Giving up control is terrifying, isn’t it? But when live our lives in complete surrender to the One that created us and knows what we need, I believe we will live a full, joy-filled life! We need to trust in the One that knows everything and knows what is best for us! Jesus was smart enough to outsmart the tricky Pharisees, compassionate enough to take time to heal those that were sick, and loving enough to sacrifice His life so that we might have life everlasting! I would say that is a God that we can surrender to - He is a loving, gracious, amazing God!
P - Lord, thank You for being my Lord and Savior! I surrender to Your will today and I give you control of every area of my life - my future, family, finances, and everything else! I desire to let my life go in order to save it. Will you show me how to do that today? I trust You! In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
